JRAIA's side event at OEWG45 in Thailand

On 3rd July 2023, JRAIA has hosted side event at OEWG45 (45th Meeting of the Open Working Group of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol) in Bangkok, Thailand.


The purpose of the JRAIA side event at OEWG 45 was to publicize the efforts of the Japanese government and the industry to achieve the 2050 carbon neutrality goal.

At the beginning of the meeting, Ms. Osawa, Assistant Director, Ministry of the Environment, explained Japan's HFC emission reduction efforts and IFL activities toward achieving the 2050 carbon neutral goal, and Mr. Yamada, Assistant Director, Ministry of the Environment, explained Japan's quota system and top runner system under the Ozone Law.

After Mr. Okada, President of the JRAIA, explained the Association's policies and initiatives toward CN2050, Mr. Asahi, Director of the Heat Pump and Thermal Storage Technology Center of Japan, introduced the importance of heat pumps and their contribution to the CN2050 project.

In addition, Mr. Yosomiya, Chair of the Global Committee of the Association, stressed the need for direct expansion air conditioning and green refrigerants.

In his closing remarks, JRAIA President Okada introduced the Kobe Symposium (2023) and HVAC&R JAPAN 2024 and requested their participation. About 40 ozone officials and industry representatives from various countries attended the side event, and the Q&A session showed the high level of interest in Japan's efforts.

On Sunday, July 2, the day before the OEWG, a one-day workshop was held to promote the Montreal Protocol,

During the five days of the OEWG, a total of 22 side events by industry-related organizations and NGOs were held at the venue.

At the Montreal Protocol Meeting of the Parties (MOP) hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), countries are discussing ways to reduce HFCs in addition to protecting the ozone layer.

Prior to the MOP, government officials, including officials from each country's National Ozone Unit (NOU), meet in the OEWG (Open Working Group) for preliminary discussions.

This year's meeting was held from July 3 to July 4, and about 500 people attended the five-day conference, including NOU officials and industry representatives from various countries. This meeting will be continued and  further discussed at MOP35 scheduled to be held in November of this year.
